The day before yesterday, the World Championships individual time trial officially started. In the top showdown of the men's elite group, Evenepoel, who represented Belgium, defeated Ganna and successfully defended the rainbow jersey!
The Belgian defended the World Championships ITT champion. Before the start, Evenepoel pedaled backward and the chain fell off the sprocket and got stuck. Although a chain-dropping device was installed, there was only one minute left before the start. You should know that the start will not be paused. The good news is that the technician was beside him and re-hung the chain before the start. But from the beginning to the end of the race, there was no data on the power meter throughout the process. Efenepoel rode completely by feeling. After the race, he said that this might be the most difficult individual time trial he has ever experienced.
In this case, Evenepoel still defeated Ganna (Italy), taking 53:01 on the 46.1-kilometer track with a climb of 405 meters, with an average speed of 52.156 kilometers per hour.
"Today was a difficult day for me. My chain got stuck a minute before the start, and then there was no power data from the beginning to the end of the race, so it was a time trial based on feelings," said Evenepoel. "I pushed very hard in the second section and also went all out on the downhill. It was very difficult to keep the rhythm in the last five kilometers without a power meter, but this is an individual time trial, especially in the World Championships, the gap is not important. I saw the time was green (leading), and I wanted to celebrate."
Evenepoel won the championship, Ganna took the second place 6 seconds behind, and Afini, who was third, was 54 seconds behind
For Evenepoel, this year is magical. Will the World Championships group race continue to create miracles?
