How to Store Carbon Wheels Properly During the Off-Season
When the riding season winds down and the days grow shorter, it’s time to give your gear a rest — including your carbon wheels. Proper storage not only preserves performance but also extends the life of your investment. Here’s how to store your carbon wheels safely and keep them ready for the next season.
1. Clean Thoroughly Before Storage
Before you pack your wheels away, clean them carefully to remove dirt, grime, and road salt that can cause corrosion or damage over time. Use a mild bike cleaner and a soft sponge — avoid harsh solvents that could harm the carbon resin or decals. Pay special attention to the braking surface and hub area.
2. Inspect for Damage
While cleaning, take the opportunity to inspect your rims for cracks, delamination, or any irregularities. Spin the wheels to check for wobbles or loose spokes. Detecting small issues early means you can repair them before they worsen during months of storage.
3. Reduce Tire Pressure
If you’re storing your wheels with tires mounted, reduce the air pressure to about half of the recommended PSI. Fully inflated tires can put unnecessary stress on the rim over time — especially if the wheels are hung or stored vertically.
4. Store in a Cool, Dry Environment
Avoid damp basements, unheated garages, or direct sunlight. Carbon fiber and the resin that bonds it can degrade when exposed to excessive heat or humidity. The ideal environment is cool, dry, and away from UV exposure.
5. Avoid Hanging by Spokes or Valves
If you choose to hang your wheels, always hang them by the rim, not the spokes or valve stem. Hanging by spokes can cause unnecessary tension, while hanging by the valve can stress the tube and rim interface. Alternatively, you can store the wheels flat or upright in wheel bags.
6. Lubricate Bearings and Freehub
A light re-lubrication of the bearings and freehub mechanism prevents corrosion and ensures smooth operation when you start riding again. Spin the wheels occasionally during storage to keep the lubricant distributed evenly.
7. Use Wheel Bags or Covers
Invest in padded wheel bags or cloth covers to protect your carbon rims from dust, accidental scratches, or UV exposure. This is especially important if you’re storing them near other tools or equipment.
8. Label and Organize
If you own multiple wheelsets — for training, racing, or gravel — label them and store them systematically. It’ll make your spring setup faster and more organized when you’re ready to ride again.
Final Thought
Proper off-season storage is more than just putting your wheels aside; it’s about ensuring they’re race-ready when the sun returns. With a little care and attention, your Superteam carbon wheels will deliver top-tier performance season after season.
