2025 Tour de France S12-S16 stage explanation

Stage 12 of the 2025 Tour de France: POGAČAR Tadej wins the “revenge battle”, leads overall by 3.5 minutes

Stage 12 covers 180.6 km with 3,850 meters of elevation. Riders face the first Category 1 and HC climbs of this year’s Tour, providing a serious test of climbing ability. After this stage, gaps in the GC standings will further widen.

At the start of the race, several riders, including MILAN Jonathan, attempted breakaways, but were quickly reeled in by the peloton. With 166 km remaining, the peloton split, and around 40 riders launched attacks to form a breakaway group.

With 61 km to go, many riders began to fall behind. Around 54 km from the finish, EVENEPOEL Remco was dropped. This demonstrated the effectiveness of Visma’s “mountain train” tactic, posing a serious challenge to many riders.

With 19 km remaining, WELLENS Tim, who had been setting the pace in the breakaway, was joined by the main group, reunited with his teammates, and continued leading. Meanwhile, an AG2R rider was soloing the final HC climb of the day.

Soon, the main group also reached the final climb. UAE Team Emirates took the front, with VINGEGAARD Jonas right behind. At 12 km to go, WELLENS Tim launched an acceleration before finishing his lead-out, and then Narváez led POGAČAR Tadej onward.

At 11 km, Narváez suddenly increased the pace. POGAČAR Tadej seized the opportunity to attack. VINGEGAARD Jonas followed quickly, but POGAČAR gained a 20-second lead and continued to expand the gap. They soon passed the AG2R breakaway rider.

With 5.2 km to go, Liboweici's Florian Lipowitcz launched an attack. In the end, POGAČAR Tadej successfully soloed to take the stage win.

VINGEGAARD Jonas crossed the line 2 minutes and 10 seconds after POGAČAR. Liboweici FLORIAN LIPOWITZ crossed 13 seconds after VINGEGAARD, taking third place.

Stage 13 of the 2025 Tour de France: POGAČAR Tadej wins mountain ITT easily, VINGEGAARD Jonas overtakes EVENEPOEL Remco

Following the previous day’s mountain stage, Stage 13 brought another summit finish — and the second ITT of the Tour, a challenging uphill time trial. Although only 10.9 km long, it featured 650 meters of elevation and 10 climbing points.

Pulap

In the first half of the race, Pulap sat in the hot seat with a time of 24:58.25, averaging 26.187 km/h. Until the last few riders finished, he remained at the top and ultimately took fifth place.

Primož Roglič

After struggling in earlier stages, Primož Roglič delivered a strong performance with a time of 24:20 and an average speed of 26.9 km/h, finishing third. He gave a good lesson to Liboweici FLORIAN LIPOWITZ, who started after him.

Liboweici FLORIAN LIPOWITZ
Liboweici also rode well but couldn’t match Roglič’s performance. He finished 36 seconds behind Roglič, but 2 seconds faster than Pulap, placing fourth. Though he didn't beat Roglič, he's a rising star.

EVENEPOEL Remco
EVENEPOEL’s condition in this Tour has continued to be poor. Aside from his strong performance in Stage 5’s flat ITT where he won, he has struggled in the climbs. In the hilly and mountain stages, whenever VINGEGAARD or POGAČAR attacked, he was unable to keep up.

In today’s ITT, he was fifth at both time checks. But in the second half of the climb, he repeatedly looked back, appearing exhausted. On the final climb, he was even overtaken by VINGEGAARD, who started two minutes after him. He finished in 25:39, placing 12th. In the GC, he now leads fourth-place Liboweici FLORIAN LIPOWITZ by only 6 seconds — the same in the white jersey competition. He’ll need to fight hard to keep the white jersey.

VINGEGAARD Jonas, POGAČAR Tadej
VINGEGAARD finished strong in 23:36, 44 seconds faster than third-place Roglič, and even overtook EVENEPOEL at the finish. But POGAČAR, with pure strength, clocked 23:00 flat, winning the stage and extending his GC lead over VINGEGAARD to 4 minutes and 7 seconds.

Stage 14 of the 2025 Tour de France: THYMEN ARENSMAN wins solo, EVENEPOEL Remco withdraws due to poor form

Stage 14 marked the final mountain stage of week two — another difficult day with 182.6 km and 4,950 meters of climbing. The first climb was the legendary Col du Tourmalet. The intermediate sprint for sprinters was thoughtfully placed before the first climb, giving them a rare opportunity to competeFrom the start, there were continuous attacks, but they were quickly reeled in. Before the intermediate sprint (113 km to go), all riders had returned to the peloton. MILAN Jonathan took 20 sprint points, increasing his green jersey lead. VAN DER POEL and Girmay finished second and third. As the sprinters dropped back, many riders launched attacks. White jersey wearer EVENEPOEL Remco was dropped from the peloton.

At that moment, EVENEPOEL returned to his team car and abandoned the race. Hopefully, he can recover and perform better in the future — after all, he’s still eligible for the white jersey.

At 12.6 km to go, riders began the final climb. With 9.8 km left, the front riders were gradually reeled in. At 3.2 km, VINGEGAARD attacked, followed closely by POGAČAR and then Liboweici. At 2.3 km, VINGEGAARD attacked again, couldn’t drop POGAČAR, but Liboweici was left behind. In the end, POGAČAR outsprinted VINGEGAARD to take second, while THYMEN ARENSMAN took his first-ever Tour stage win — a life-changing victory for any rider.

Stage 15 of the 2025 Tour de France: WELLENS Tim wins solo, VINGEGAARD Jonas crashes

With two-thirds of the Tour complete, riders were looking forward to the second rest day. Stage 15, a hilly stage of 170 km and 2,400 meters of climbing, came after multiple mountain stages.

The race began with two riders attacking early, but they were quickly caught. With 152 km to go, VINGEGAARD, Alaphilippe, POGAČAR, and FLORIAN LIPOWITZ crashed in the peloton. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries. They quickly remounted and chased back. At 143 km, VAN DER POEL and MOHORIČ attacked while some riders were still behind the main group.

As the climb began, some in the front breakaway dropped back, while UAE, Visma, and Tudor teams increased the pace in the peloton.

This stage’s theme was breakaways. At 92 km, JORGENSON attacked again but was caught after 2 km. Several more riders attacked but were also brought back.

In the second and third groups behind, many riders tried to break away. The situation constantly shifted, but no one could catch WELLENS Tim, who led solo to the finish.

Julian Alaphilippe, apparently due to a faulty radio, thought he had won and celebrated — another "premature celebration" moment.

Stage 16 of the 2025 Tour de France: VINGEGAARD Jonas attacks four times, VALENTIN PARET-PEINTRE narrowly beats HEALY Ben

After the final rest day, riders faced another mountain stage: Stage 16, with 171 km and 2,950 meters of climbing. The only HC climb of the day was in the final 17 km — the iconic Mont Ventoux — also the scene of previous POGAČAR vs. VINGEGAARD battles.

On the rest day, VAN DER POEL withdrew due to pneumonia. A top contender for the Super Combative Award, he had provided many exciting moments. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

The race began with multiple riders attacking, joined by more and more as the stage progressed.

On the climb, the breakaway group held a lead of over six minutes ahead of the POGAČAR–VINGEGAARD group.

With 9 km to go, HEALY Ben attacked from the third group and began chasing ahead. Alaphilippe dropped from the second group. At 8.1 km, HEALY, now in the second group, attacked again, chasing MASS, with Pamparet also chasing.

At 7.7 km to go, VINGEGAARD launched an attack from the peloton. POGAČAR quickly responded and followed. At 6.8 km to go, they reeled in Campanat. The same scenario repeated — VINGEGAARD attacking, POGAČAR sticking close and not dropping.

With 1.1 km to go, VINGEGAARD and POGAČAR attacked each other again. The time gap to the front group was less than a minute, and they were approaching the final sprint. HEALY stuck close to Pamparet, but in the final corner, Pamparet passed HEALY from the inside to win the stage. HEALY took second. POGAČAR sprinted ahead of VINGEGAARD by 4 seconds.
