2026 Vuelta a España S16: Visma Leads Brennan to His Fourth Win

Stage 16 of the 2026 Vuelta a España, held on September 8 from Cortegana to La Rábida, ended in another bunch sprint. A five-rider breakaway formed early, but Visma and Cofidis controlled the peloton. The break was finally caught with 11 km to go, setting up a fast finish.

The race started with rolling terrain, and the breakaway built a gap of around three minutes. As the stage progressed, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe increased the pace, forcing the breakaway riders to fight for their advantage. Uno-X rider Tobias Halland Johannessen made a late solo attack, but he was caught with 11 km remaining.

Inside the final kilometers, the sprint teams moved to the front. Visma | Lease a Bike took control, with Wout van Aert leading the team’s sprint train. Brennan launched his sprint with just over 300 meters to go and secured his fourth stage victory of this year’s Vuelta.

After the stage, Van Aert said his main job was to keep Brennan in the best possible position for the final sprint. Brennan attacked earlier than expected, but the team successfully held on for another victory.

After Stage 16, Mads Pedersen retained the red jersey, Wout van Aert held the green jersey, Buitrago kept the polka-dot jersey, and Arensman remained in the white jersey.

Stage 17, from Dos Hermanas to Seville, was scheduled for September 9.

2026 Vuelta a España S17: Brennan Takes Fifth Win as Visma Sets New Record

Stage 17 of the 2026 Vuelta a España, from Dos Hermanas to Seville, covered 189.2 km on mostly flat roads. Three riders initially formed the breakaway, but the peloton remained in control and caught the final escapee with just 3 km to go.

FDJ's Paul Lapeira, Uno-X's Alexander Kristoff, and Burgos-BH's José Félix Parra initially went clear, but the breakaway soon split. Lapeira and Fernández continued as a two-rider break, building a maximum advantage of more than five minutes.

Visma | Lease a Bike and Cofidis controlled the peloton for much of the stage, while Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe briefly increased the pace and caused a split in the bunch. Despite their efforts, the breakaway riders were eventually caught in the final kilometers.

With the sprint teams moving into position, Visma once again delivered a powerful lead-out for Matthew Brennan. The 21-year-old won the stage to claim his fifth victory of the 2026 Vuelta, matching a historic record that had stood since 1979.

Brennan became the first rider since 1979 to win five stages on his Vuelta debut. His remarkable performance has made him one of the biggest stars of this year's race.

The victory was also historic for Visma | Lease a Bike. The team secured its seventh stage win of the Vuelta, surpassing its previous Grand Tour record of six wins in a single edition, achieved at the 2022 Tour de France and 2026 Giro d'Italia.

After the stage, Brennan credited the entire team, especially Wout van Aert, for positioning him perfectly for the sprint. Van Aert also praised the team's teamwork and atmosphere.

Mads Pedersen retained the red jersey, Wout van Aert the green jersey, Santiago Buitrago the polka-dot jersey, and Oscar Onley the white jersey.

Stage 18, a Jerez individual time trial, was scheduled for September 10.

2026 Vuelta a España S18: Stefan Küng Wins the Time Trial

Stage 18 of the 2026 Vuelta a España was a 32.1 km flat individual time trial in Jerez. The stage created another major shake-up in the general classification, with riders fighting for crucial time ahead of the final mountain stages.

Tudor Pro Cycling's Stefan Küng delivered a superb performance, completing the course in 35:22 to win the stage by three seconds. He paced his effort carefully, gaining time in the second half and maintaining a consistent rhythm through the technical sections.

Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe's Primož Roglič finished fourth in 35:41, significantly reducing his deficit in the overall classification. His strong ride moved him into second overall, keeping his hopes of winning the Vuelta alive.

Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale's Felix Gall struggled, finishing in 38:24. He lost significant time to Roglič and dropped further down the overall standings.

Ineos Grenadiers' Oscar Onley also lost ground, while Visma | Lease a Bike's Sepp Kuss dropped out of the top 10 after a disappointing time trial.

Race leader Enric Mas produced a controlled ride, finishing in 36:11 for 12th place. He lost only 33 seconds to Roglič and successfully defended the red jersey. Mas now leads Roglič by 1:37 with two mountain stages remaining.

Wout van Aert finished 20 seconds behind Küng. After securing a strong advantage in the points classification, he can now focus on supporting his teammates in the remaining stages.

With the time trial complete, the Vuelta enters its decisive final mountain battles. Mas will look to defend his narrow lead, while Roglič will aim to close the gap on the climbs. The fight for the overall victory remains wide open.

2026 Vuelta a España S19: Dunbar Takes a Dramatic Win as Mas Holds Red

Stage 19 of the 2026 Vuelta a España covered 210.8 km from Vélez-Málaga to Peñas Blancas. It was the longest stage of the race and featured more than 4,000 meters of climbing, making it a major test for both breakaway riders and the general classification contenders.

After several hours of attacks, a 16-rider breakaway finally formed and built a lead of more than seven minutes. The GC teams allowed the group to fight for the stage win while Movistar continued to control the pace in the peloton.

EF Education-EasyPost's Richard Carapaz attempted a long-range attack to shake up the GC battle, but Movistar and the other leading teams quickly neutralized the move.

The decisive battle came on the final 18.8 km climb to Peñas Blancas, which averaged 6.5%. Bahrain Victorious' Santiago Buitrago attacked with 13 km to go, forming a four-rider lead group with Q36.5's Eddie Dunbar and Gianluca Brambilla, along with Bastien Tronchon.

Buitrago launched another powerful attack inside the final 2 km and appeared to be heading for victory. However, Dunbar patiently followed around 20 meters behind before making his move with just 350 meters remaining. Buitrago ran out of energy, allowing Dunbar to surge past and take his first Grand Tour stage victory.

The GC battle was quieter. Primož Roglič attacked with 2 km remaining, but the move was quickly brought back. Enric Mas therefore retained the red jersey with a 1:37 lead over Roglič, while Felix Gall remained third overall.

After Stage 19, Mas held the red jersey, Wout van Aert the green jersey, Buitrago the polka-dot jersey, and Oscar Onley the white jersey.

Stage 20, from La Calahorra to the Alguacil summit, was scheduled for September 12 and promised another crucial mountain battle.

2026 Vuelta a España S20: Landa Returns to Victory After 11 Years

Stage 20 of the 2026 Vuelta a España was a brutal 186.8 km mountain stage with nearly 5,000 meters of climbing. Five categorized climbs were on the route, with the final ascent expected to decide both the stage and the general classification.

The race exploded from the start. Wout van Aert attacked early, with UAE Team Emirates' Oliveira following him. The move briefly split the peloton and left race leader Enric Mas isolated, but Movistar quickly reacted and brought him back into the main group.

After numerous attacks, a 14-rider breakaway eventually formed. The race remained highly aggressive, with several groups fighting for position. Van Aert collected valuable climbing points along the way, putting pressure on Santiago Buitrago's lead in the mountains classification.

The GC battle intensified with around 100 km remaining. Richard Carapaz and Sepp Kuss launched a long-range attack, while Felix Gall followed the move. Mas and Primož Roglič stayed calm in the main GC group and successfully controlled the attacks.

On the decisive climbs, Mikel Landa joined the front group and formed a three-rider breakaway with Uno-X's Tobias Halland Johannessen and Decathlon's Romain Bardet. The trio worked together through the demanding final section.

The final climb was just 8.3 km long but averaged 9.8%, with sections reaching 22%. Landa launched his decisive solo attack with 7 km to go. He maintained a steady pace all the way to the summit to claim a memorable victory.

It was Landa's first Vuelta stage win in 11 years, with his previous victory coming in 2015. After several difficult seasons, the Spanish veteran completed a remarkable comeback on home roads.

Behind him, the GC contenders continued their battle. Felix Gall produced a powerful attack inside the final 2 km and finished 17 seconds ahead of Mas and 55 seconds ahead of Roglič. Mas remained composed and successfully defended the red jersey.

After Stage 20, Mas continued to lead the overall classification, with Wout van Aert in the green jersey, Santiago Buitrago in the polka-dot jersey, and Oscar Onley in the white jersey.

The Vuelta now heads into its final stage, Stage 21, a circuit race in Granada, where Mas will look to complete his title-winning campaign.

2026 Vuelta a España S21: Johannessen Wins the Finale as Mas Takes Overall Victory

The 2026 Vuelta a España came to an end on September 14 with a 112 km circuit race in Granada. With all four leaders' jerseys already decided, the opening part of the stage was largely a celebration of the riders' achievements before the racing intensified in the city.

The peloton completed several laps through Granada, including four ascents near the Alhambra. Movistar controlled the pace early to protect Enric Mas and eliminate any risks to his overall lead.

The action intensified with around 50 km remaining. FDJ increased the pace, and a series of attacks eventually produced a strong breakaway group. Several top sprinters, including Matthew Brennan and Tobias Halland Johannessen, joined the moves as teams tried to prevent a straightforward bunch sprint.

On the final climb, Bahrain Victorious' Pello Bilbao attacked with the support of teammate Mikel Landa, while Ineos Grenadiers' Magnus Sheffield responded with 8 km to go. After several attacks, a 12-rider group formed at the front.

The decisive move came inside the final kilometer. Decathlon's Romain Bardet, Uno-X's Tobias Halland Johannessen and Astana's Ivan Romeo broke clear to form a three-rider group. Johannessen produced the strongest finishing kick to win the final stage of the 2026 Vuelta.

For Johannessen, the victory ended a winless run of more than three years. He had originally been assigned a supporting role for Uno-X teammate Tobias Halland Johannessen but seized his opportunity when the race situation changed.

Behind the leaders, Enric Mas crossed the finish safely with his Movistar teammates to secure the overall Vuelta victory. The Spanish rider became the first homegrown Spanish winner since Alberto Contador in 2014 and the 64th different overall champion in Vuelta history.

Mas completed a consistent three-week campaign, successfully defending his lead through the mountains, time trial, and final attacks from Roglič and Gall.

The 2026 Vuelta ended with Mas taking the red jersey, Wout van Aert the green jersey, Santiago Buitrago the polka-dot jersey, and Oscar Onley the white jersey.

The organizers also announced that the 2027 Vuelta a España will take place from September 4 to 26, with the race starting in Galicia in northern Spain.
