2026 Vuelta a España Stage 1: Pogačar Wins in Monaco

The 2026 Vuelta a España opened on August 23 with a short 9.4 km individual time trial in Monaco. The fast course produced a thrilling battle, with riders constantly taking over the hot seat.

INEOS Grenadiers’ Tarlton eventually set a strong time of 11:01, but his lead was soon beaten by Soudal Quick-Step’s Hatt. Then Tadej Pogačar took the start.

Familiar with Monaco’s roads, Pogačar delivered a near-perfect ride and finished in 10:57, beating Hatt by just 0.09 seconds. Primož Roglič finished 22 seconds behind.

With the victory, Pogačar claimed both the red leader’s jersey and green points jersey, while Tarlton took the white jersey.

The 2026 Vuelta could not have started with more excitement, as Pogačar immediately showed his strength on home roads in Monaco.

2026 Vuelta a España Stage 2: Brennan Takes His First Win

Stage 2 of the 2026 Vuelta a España covered 215 km from Monaco to Maçanet on August 23. After an early breakaway, the main group caught the escapees with around 30 km to go.

Bahrain Victorious’ Bauke Mollema led the breakaway.

Visma | Lease a Bike controlled the finale, setting up their young sprinter **Matthew Brennan** for the win. In the final kilometers, Wout van Aert briefly attacked on a short climb, forcing Tadej Pogačar to respond, but the move was eventually neutralized.

With 300 meters remaining, Brennan launched his sprint. He held off the competition to claim his ‘first Vuelta stage victory’, while Mikel Landa took second and Pogačar finished third.

Thanks to four bonus seconds, Pogačar retained the **red leader’s jersey and green points jersey**. Bauke Mollema took the polka-dot jersey, while Brennan claimed the white jersey.

Stage 3 will cover 174 km from Grignan to Roquemaure on August 24.

2026 Vuelta a España Stage 3: Hail Forces Neutralization

Stage 3 of the 2026 Vuelta a España covered 174 km from Grignan to Roquemaure. Six riders formed an early breakaway, while the peloton planned to catch them on the final climbs in the last 20 km.

As the race entered the mountains, however, heavy hail hit the course. The roads became extremely slippery, making racing increasingly dangerous. The race organizers eventually decided to neutralize the stage and set the top of Mont-Louis as the temporary finish point.

UAE Team Emirates–XRG had been controlling the peloton for Tadej Pogačar, preparing for a possible attack on the final climbs. Once the neutralization was announced, Pogačar waved to other riders to slow down and safely ride to the neutralized finish.

The decision prevented a potentially serious crash in the worsening weather conditions. Riders were then collected by their team cars, and the stage was brought to an early end.

Stage 4 will take place on August 25 with a short 104.9 km circuit race in Andorra.

2026 Vuelta a España Stage 4: Pogačar Dominates in Andorra

Stage 4 of the 2026 Vuelta a España took place in Andorra over a short but brutal 104 km course featuring several tough climbs.

Several teams launched early attacks, but the peloton gradually brought the breakaway back. On the second major climb, Decathlon–AG2R La Mondiale launched a powerful mountain train that briefly split the peloton.

However, Tadej Pogačar had other plans. With more than 50 km remaining, he launched a devastating solo attack. The other GC contenders struggled to respond, and Pogačar quickly rode away from the field.

A nine-rider chase group formed behind him, including Primož Roglič, Carlos Rodríguez, Enric Mas and Sepp Kuss, but none could close the gap. Pogačar continued his solo ride to the finish and won by an impressive 3 minutes 21 seconds.

With maximum points on three climbs, Pogačar also took over the polka-dot jersey, becoming the first rider in this year’s Vuelta to hold the red, green and polka-dot jerseys simultaneously. Thymen Arensman? claimed the white jersey.

After four stages, Pogačar has already established a commanding lead and looks increasingly difficult to challenge in the general classification.

Stage 5 will offer the sprinters a chance to shine.

2026 Vuelta a España Stage 5: Brennan Takes His Second Win

Stage 5 of the 2026 Vuelta a España was a relatively flat stage from Falset to Roquetes, making a bunch sprint the expected finale.

Five riders initially formed a breakaway, but the peloton kept the gap under control. UAE Team Emirates–XRG, Visma | Lease a Bike and INEOS Grenadiers worked together to bring the escapees back.

As the race entered the final kilometers, Visma | Lease a Bike took full control. Wout van Aert helped set the pace before Christophe Laporte delivered a powerful lead-out for young sprinter Matthew Brennan.

Brennan timed his sprint perfectly and crossed the line first to claim his second stage victory of the 2026 Vuelta, confirming his excellent form.

Tadej Pogačar retained the red, green and polka-dot jerseys, while Thymen Arensman continued to hold the white jersey.

Stage 6 will take the riders from Alcossebre to Castellón on August 27.
